Is Gold a “Cash Cow That’s Long Overdue for Milking”?

that's long overdue for milking

Analysts at Scotia Mocatta presented a rather bearish comment on gold in a note to clients yesterday, contending that lower prices are likely for the yellow metal in the near future.

“The North American market definitely squeezed out some European shorts yesterday but another failure to break $1800 really didn’t bode well for gold’s overall prospects yesterday,” the firm wrote.  ”Although there has been some fresh ETF demand in general gold has been walked higher in recent days and frankly it really hasn’t been performing that well.”

Scotia Mocatta went on to say that “With governments falling left and right in Europe if there was ever a time that gold should be pushing the envelope as a safe haven then it’s now and it’s simply not happening – so why isn’t it happening?  We think the reason is it remains a very overcrowded trade and if it’s hard to attract fresh buyers in the current environment.”

Couple this with the fact that people need cash in either a ‘risk on’ or ‘risk off’ environment,” the firm added, “and gold looks increasingly like a cash cow that’s long overdue for milking.”

As for specific targets on the downside, the firm asserted that “When $1750 breaks the 100 Day MA at $1692 will past be in play…although there will be pockets of support along the way.”

The firm did not provide a longer-term gold price target, however.

Klondex Reports “Excellent Productivity and Solid Assays” at Fire Creek

Klondex Mines (KDX.TSX) announced that its active 2011 surface drilling program continues to find new gold veins and to expand the scope of the resource at its Fire Creek property in North Central Nevada. The emerging gold Company has completed 16,947 feet of core and 18,040 feet of reverse circulation drilling thus far at Fire Creek. Twenty holes have been completed to date, with assays received for 12 holes that are reported below. The 2011 surface program is estimated to comprise 30-35 holes and approximately 56,000 feet of exploration drilling. Full Klondex News Release.

HIGHLIGHTS:
* Fire Creek’s north Main Zone mineralization was extended by drill hole FC1104 which intersected the strongest gold values yet encountered in this area. The intercepts included 0.298 ounces per ton (oz/t) gold over a true width of 53.6 feet.
* Hole FC1107RC intersected new veins between the Main and Far North Zones, including true widths of 4.2 feet averaging 0.389 oz/t gold and 2.1 feet averaging 0.544 oz/t gold.
* New North Zone infill hole FC1112 intersected two gold veins of 0.30 oz/t or more, including 4.1 feet averaging 1.41 oz/ton gold.

Blane Wilson, Klondex President and CEO:

"Despite initial delays, our surface exploration program is proceeding very well, with excellent productivity and solid assays from the first set of holes that we are reporting today. In these twelve holes, seven had values over 0.03 oz/ton gold and our team encountered nine gold intercepts greater than 0.29 oz/ton."

Cheryl Brandon, portfolio manager at Waterton Global Value, L.P.:

"We are pleased with the progress Klondex has made to date at its Fire Creek project. We look forward to continue working with management during the development of the underground mine to facilitate the bulk sample and fund further ongoing exploration drilling."
